The Boro technique is a Japanese textile tradition born out of necessity and creativity. It emerged among the working classes of rural Japan, especially between the 18th and 19th centuries, when resources were scarce. It consists of repairing and reinforcing worn fabrics through visible patches and stitching, using scraps of other fabrics, usually cotton or linen dyed with indigo.
Far from being simply a form of patchwork, Boro has become a unique aesthetic expression. Each garment worked with this technique tells a story, reflecting the passage of time, care, and respect for the materials. Today, Boro is valued not only as a sustainable practice but also as a textile art form that inspires designers, collectors, and lovers of conscious fashion.
